I am a licensed acupuncturist who is constantly striving to become the most effective healer I can be. Recently, I stumbled upon Susan McCrossin’s book, Breaking the Learning Barrier: Eradicating ADD, ADHD, and Dyslexia. Something I had always known growing up was that I had dyslexia. I worked very hard for good grades, harder than I should have had to. When I found Chinese Medicine I was so motivated to learn I put my heart and soul into school. Learning was still never easy, and my dyslexia was only a mild case.
“Most of what we learn comes into our brains through our eyes and ears. When information enters the brain, it needs to go to the correct location with the proper timing. When this doesn’t happen, we aren’t able to think or learn easily.” p. 24
Since I only experienced the intricacies of my own brain, I didn’t know learning was supposed to be easy. Generally, after reading for a few minutes I felt tired. I understand now that when the brain encounters a stressful situation, it begins shutting down. For me and many others who don’t have full access to brain connections, reading was stressful.
“Learning difficulties result from blockage to one or more subconscious functions in the brain. More severe learning difficulties are caused when there are several blocks to specific functions and blocks to the routes of integration” p. 25
When I learned that my problems were related to my brain’s circuitry and out of my control, it gave me a sense of empowerment… because I now knew that there was a solution. Since receiving my integration, I have experienced huge changes in how I read and how much I comprehend. Generally, my brain processes information much faster and my physical coordination is even improved.
I have a huge amount of compassion for those out there struggling with learning difficulties. After studying with Susan, I am completely dedicated to bring this work to those in need.
